Me and my family have struggled with our weight for years, and it finally got to a point that we simply couldn’t take it anymore. The biggest wake up call for us, was when we were all walking through the mall, and a little boy who passed us said to his mother, “Mommy, look at the fat family!”
The next day, I made an appointment for all of us with a weight loss specialist to discuss our options. I love my family, and want us to all be around for as long as possible, and being overweight is not a good way to accomplish that.
A lot of the things that the doctor told us were things we had already suspected. We eat too much. We eat unhealthy foods. We snack too much between meals. While we already knew this, hearing it come from the doctor’s mouth really helped it sink in for my family. The doctor suggested that if we still needed to snack, that we choose a light snack that is tasty and healthy. He suggested lightly salted popcorn without butter, and we decided we would give that a try.
After the doctor’s appointment, we went out looking for a popcorn popper. We knew absolutely nothing about them. For instance, we didn’t know the difference between a popcorn popper and a popcorn maker, or how to know which one was the best home popcorn machine. Eventually, we took a shot in the dark and picked one, we decided on the West Bend Stir Crazy 6 Quart Popcorn Popper, and so far we have been very satisfied with our decision.
The first thing I realized I loved about this popcorn popper is that it’s so easy to use! Remember, I had no experience prior to this with making popcorn at home, so I thought I would be in way over my head the first time I attempted to make a batch of popcorn. The company claims it can make up to six quarts of popcorn in just five minutes. Now that I’ve got this machine down to a science I find these figures to be accurate, but my first time it probably took me closer to 10 minutes. Still not bad for six quarts of popcorn from a first timer.
Another thing I really like about this popcorn popper, is that I can just set it and forget it. I have seen my friends make popcorn on the stove top before and it requires constant attention and constant stirring. With this popcorn maker, it stirs the popcorn all on its own, so you can turn it on and walk away with no worries. It also does an excellent job at popping all of the kernels evenly, meaning there are no burnt kernels with unpopped kernels at the bottom, like so often happens with microwave popcorn (something my family will never buy ever again).
I started waking up every morning and running two batches, totaling 12 quarts of popcorn per day. This is usually enough to let our family have healthy snacks throughout the whole day, but if we run out, like when the kids have friends over, it is easy enough for them to make a batch on their own.
After a while, we did get a bit tired of eating unbuttered, lightly salted popcorn, but didn’t want to go the unhealthy route and start using butter or other unhealthy ingredients. After finding out one of my friends was a popcorn enthusiast, we started discussing recipes and she recommended using spices to switch things up. She really recommended those seasonings and rubs that are meant for steaks – you can use them as if they were salt and they really make the taste of the popcorn explode. You wouldn’t even know you were eating a healthy snack if you tried some of my homemade popcorn made with my favorite flavor of seasoning.
Of course, none of this would be very important at all, if it didn’t help me and my family reach our health goals. Since we started eating popcorn three months ago, we have all lost weight. The biggest “loser” lost a whopping 25 pounds, but even the person who lost the least still lost 10 pounds. I should point out that we have made other healthy changes to our diet besides just eating popcorn, but the popcorn popper has been a savior for us to stop us from snacking. I would recommend this popcorn popper to anyone who is looking to lose weight.
